NMS sends Ucrew interns to Cumbria, in the north-west of England, in partnership with Carlisle Diocese (Church of England).
As an intern in Cumbria, you will be placed with one church or ministry, joining in their everyday work. Most of the placements in Cumbria consists of children and youth ministry, but you may also be involved in other types of ministry including Sunday service, music, Tots & Toddler- groups and Café church.
Network Youth Church (NYC)
Most UCrewers will work or partner with Network Youth Church (NYC). This is part of Fresh Expressions, which consists of finding new ways of connecting with and building church with young people “out there” as opposed to only inviting them into church buildings and activities. NYC works intentionally in creating these new connections, especially with unchurched young people, where learning more about God, being part of a Christian community and growing as disciples of Jesus are at the forefront. The different NYC´s in the diocese might express their work differently, but their focus is all on creating smaller communities for the young people, and bringing these communities together for a yearly event, called Ablaze.
What you will do
As part of Ucrew England, you will join in with what your placement church is doing in terms of ministry and mission. Most interns will do:
-Children and youth ministry
-Lunch clubs at school
-Meeting up with young people where they are, i.e. parks, streets, cafes etc
-Youth weekends away
–Other types of Church ministry
Where is Cumbria?
Cumbria is as far north- west in England as you can get, right on the Scottish boarder. The landscape looks exactly like an episode out of Postman Pat, which is fair enough seeing as writer John Cunliffe found his inspiration for Pat when he lived in Kendal in Cumbria. Here is rolling hills and stone walls, and countless of sheep! Some say there are 6 sheep per person in Cumbria!
In Cumbria you will also find the Lake District, England’s biggest national park and part of the World heritage site. In the Lakes you will find Scafell Pike, which is the highest mountain in the district (it´s 978m tall) and Wastwater, which is the deepest lake.
Statistics shows that the Lakes welcomes approximately 15,8 tourists every year, and it´s a sought-after place for walkers in all shapes and forms.
Ucrew England is always an international team, and have previously received interns from Norway, Estonia, France, Taiwan, Brazil, USA and Canada, in addition to British interns.
The interns are recruited by NMS in collaboration with NMS´ partners in the interns’ home countries.
In England, the interns will have monthly training days for teaching and catching up, in addition to various other social events. This will mainly be hosted by Leah and Sophie; both NMS missionaries living in Cumbria, who are responsible for Ucrew England.
In England you will either live with a host family connected to your placement church, or in a shared house together with other Ucrewers.
